While we are still working on putting together a million of images and thoughts of experience of our first two weeks in Malaysia (we have been changing locations every two-three nights so far, to experience and capture on camera as much as possible), I would like to share a few words about an unforgettable hotel experience in Penang Island.
After city hopping for over a week (we already bus-toured half of Malaysia) we set off to Penang Island, which I was extremely excited about. Very well known for its local food, street art and rich history, Penang attracted me more than other locations in Malaysia. I was however not so interested in seeing the town where we were settling: Batu Ferringhi sounded like a kitsch tourist destination, full of hotels, touristy restaurants and nothing local to see.
Then what happened was: 3 days gone of our time at Penang Island and we have not event moved from Batu Ferringhi yet… We just did not feel like leaving our hotel. Sounds silly, but, in two weeks there have been good and bad experiences (which I will explain separately bit-by-bit), with both accommodation and food and we missed comfort so much! From the moment of arrival to Rasa Sayang by Shangri-Lawe felt like we were home (which is what you miss most whether you are a full-time traveller or just on a long vacation): the room was extremely spacious and comfortable, attentive staff, park-like environment with fresh air and a lovely beach within a minute’s reach.
Check-in and checkout is extremely easy: you are offered assistance with your luggage as soon as you arrive and you may sip on a delicious chilled welcome drink while you wait for your check-in documentation to be processed or your room to be prepared.
Our room was extremely comfortable and spacious (and even had an additional bath on the balcony, facing the sea!). There was a huge comfortable bed, TV, working desk, lounge and an espresso machine (essential in Malaysia). There is a very good high-speed Wi-Fi, throughout all hotel, gym with all essentials and even a hair and nails bar. The room was made twice a day and towels, fresh fruit and any other essentials including fresh water were replenished. Furthermore, every day you will find a little traditional snack as a treat left for you under a traditional hat (such a shame I forgot to take a picture of this!).
Because our room was located at Rasa Wing of the hotel, we were offered two options for breakfast: A La Carte and Buffet (definitely try both if you stay). Buffet breakfast is where I was tempted to try at least 50 different dishes – so much choice – and tropical fruit, which I have never heard of before… At the A La Carte Restaurant, we were treated to a high-end morning meal in a beautiful sea view environment, with made-to-order meal of your choice and really good buffet platters. Both restaurants have plentiful fresh fruit and juice available. In the afternoon, we were also offered Afternoon Tea at the lounge of Rasa Wing (must have). Such a treat: freshly prepared sandwiches and scones and a chocolate cake to die for (which we really started missing after 10 days in Malaysia). They also offer a drink and canapés between in the evening, which you can have before you set off to dinner.
Besides chilling in an outdoor pool in a beautiful garden or having a walk on a beach, you can also have a Spa in your own room! We spent most of our second day relaxing in our bath on the balcony of our room, chilling and watching the ocean. You will find a menu with loads of different massage and spa services in our room, which you can order directly to your hotel room.
All in all, we had an amazing time and now feel fully refreshed and energized to continue our trip: our schedule will be so busy over the next couple weeks and this was so much needed! I will be looking to return to Rasa Sayang, next time when I will be looking for an impeccable relaxing vacation.
